It has been in use since the British colonial period and is widely accepted around the world. “Bharat” is the name for India in various Indian languages and has historical and cultural significance. It is derived from ancient Indian texts like the Mahabharata and is seen as a symbol of the country’s rich heritage. The debate over which name to use has sparked discussions in India, with proponents of “Bharat” advocating for a stronger connection to the country’s ancient roots, while those in favor of “India” emphasize its global recognition.

HISTORY OF “BHARAT”-

1-According to Rig Veda and Battle of Ten Kings-

According to the History of India’s Geography; the land of seven rivers, the Rig Veda’s 18th hymn of seventh book describes about the terrible war which is known as ‘Dasharajna’ or battle of ten kings. In ancient India, there was a significant battle called the ‘Dasharajna’ or the battle of ten kings. This battle took place near the Ravi River in Punjab. It involved ten powerful tribes who wanted to overthrow King Sudasa of the Bharata tribe from the Trtsu Dynasty.

However, King Sudasa emerged victorious, and his fame led people to identify themselves as part of the Bharata tribe. Over time, the name ‘Bharata’ became widely used, and the land was eventually called ‘Bharat Varsha,’ meaning the land of Bharata.

2-According to Mahabharata –

According to the Mahabharata, India got its name ‘Bharatvarsha’ from a legendary emperor named Bharata Chakravarti. Bharata was the founder of the Bharata Dynasty and an ancestor of the Pandavas and Kauravas. He was the son of King Dushyanta of Hastinapur and Queen Sakuntala, belonging to the Kshatriya Varna. Bharata is known for conquering all of Greater India and uniting it into a single political entity, which was then named ‘Bharatvarsha’ in his honor.

3-According to Vishnu Purana-

उत्तरं यत्समुद्रस्य हिमाद्रेश्चैव दक्षिणम् ।
वर्षं तद् भारतं नाम भारती यत्र संततिः ।।

The shloka says: “The country that lies north of the ocean and south of the snowy mountains is called Bharatam; there dwell the descendants of Bharata.”This means that the name Bharata is derived from these texts, known as the Puranas. They used the term Bharata Varsam to describe the land we now know as India, distinguishing it from other continents.

It’s fascinating that Bharatvarsha or India encompassed present-day Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, North-West Tibet, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

5- Used by Greeks since 5th century BCE-

The name “India” indeed has a rich historical background. “Hindustan” translates to “Land of the Hindus.” Prior to the partition of India in 1947, this term was used to describe a region that encompassed not only what is now modern-day India but also parts of present-day Pakistan.
These historical and linguistic connections highlight the diverse cultural and historical tapestry that has shaped the name and identity of India over the centuries.
