-Earthquakes are one of the most awe-inspiring and destructive natural phenomena on our planet. These seismic events have shaped landscapes, altered the course of history, and continue to pose a significant threat to human civilization.

MOROCCO EARTHQUAKE — **EPICENTRE OF THE EARTHQUAKE**

-Morocco, nestled in the northwest corner of Africa, is a land rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. However, its landscape bears witness to a powerful and relentless force that has shaped its topography over millennia – earthquakes. Morocco is located at the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it prone to seismic activity. The country is crisscrossed by fault lines, with the most prominent being the Atlas Mountains, where the African plate collides with the Eurasian plate.

-Timing and Epicentre-

It took place on Friday night, a few minutes past 11 p.m. local time when disaster struck. The earthquake’s epicenter was approximately 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) southwest of Marrakech, a beloved city with 840,000 inhabitants and a thriving tourism industry.

-The seismic force, with a relatively shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.4 miles), had devastating consequences.II. The Human Toll: The toll on human life was devastating. Over 800 lives were tragically lost, and 672 individuals found themselves injured, with 205 in critical condition. The challenge lay not only in the number of casualties but also in their geographic dispersion, as many were situated in hard-to-reach mountainous regions.

-One of the most heartbreaking aspects of this tragedy was the location of many victims. Remote mountainous areas, with their difficult terrain, posed significant challenges for rescue and relief efforts. Accessing these regions became a formidable task, compounding the suffering of those in need.

Historic town damaged–

In the old city of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, some residents were injured as buildings and city walls were damaged and partially collapsed.

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI ordered the military to help with a large-scale disaster. They’re using air and land resources, specialized rescue teams, and a field hospital. Despite offers from around the world,The country hasn’t officially requested outside help yet.

In Marrakech, the historic Koutoubia Mosque, built in the 12th century, was damaged. The tall 69-meter minaret is a famous part of Marrakech. Some parts of the famous red walls around the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, were also damaged.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco.

Mr. Modi also said that India is ready to offer all possible assistance in this difficult time.

He said “Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time.”
