During President Macron’s visit to India, the French delegation addressed concerns regarding the potential revocation of Vanessa Dougnac’s Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, which could lead to her expulsion from the country.
This issue was discussed in bilateral meetings held as part of the Republic Day celebrations, highlighting the significance attached to it by both nations.
Dougnac, a journalist for prominent French publications like Le Point and La Croix, has found herself at the center of controversy due to allegations of spreading negative perceptions of India through her reporting.
Despite these accusations, she vehemently denies any wrongdoing and asserts her deep affection for India, where she has resided for over two decades as the spouse of an Indian national.
The Indian government’s Home Ministry issued Dougnac a notice on January 19, signaling the possible cancellation of her OCI card due to visa violations. She has been given until February 2 to respond to these allegations before a final decision is made.
Throughout this ordeal, Dougnac has maintained her innocence and urged respect for her privacy as the process unfolds.
While France has raised the issue diplomatically, thirty foreign correspondents based in India have expressed their solidarity with Dougnac through an open letter.
They voice their deep concern over the potential withdrawal of her OCI status, citing her significant contributions as a senior journalist covering South Asia.
Additionally, they highlight the broader challenges faced by foreign journalists in India, including increased visa restrictions and administrative hurdles.
In light of these developments, there is a collective call for the Indian authorities to uphold press freedom and resolve Dougnac’s case expeditiously, in accordance with democratic principles.
The outcome of this case will not only impact Dougnac’s livelihood but also have broader implications for the functioning of a free press in India.
