Vinesh Phogat Takes a Stand! Returns 2 Prestigious Medals in Protest

VINESH PHOGAT – WHO IS RETURNING ARJUNA AND KHEL RATNA AWARD IN PROTEST-

She’s from a small town in Haryana, where wrestling is like the cool thing to do. Vinesh caught the wrestling bug early, and boy, did she run with it!

Every time she steps onto the wrestling stage, it’s like watching a blockbuster. Commonwealth Games? Yep, she aced it. Asian Games? Oh, she owned it! Medals? She’s got a collection that shines brighter than a treasure chest.

But recently the wrestling world is more in news for their protest against the alleged sexual harassment faced by women wrestlers  from the former wrestling chief, Brij Bhushan Singh.

In a whirlwind of wrestling news, vinesh phogat, the third powerhouse in the protest trio alongside Sakshee Malikkh and Bajrang Punia, is making headlines again.

Just days after Sakshee waved goodbye to wrestling and Bajrang handed back his Padma Shri, Vinesh is returning her Khel Ratna and Arjuna award, taking a bold stand against the former Wrestling Federation of India chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

vinesh phogat’s letter to Prime Minister

In an emotional open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, she asked whether women wrestlers were made only to grace government advertisements of “beti bachao, beti padhao”and said she is returning the Khel Ratna – the country’s highest sporting honour – and Arjuna Award so that they don’t become a “burden on the path of living with dignity“.

She also said that the wrestlers were considered the country’s pride when they won medals, but are now being labelled traitors because they spoke out for justice.

Prime Minister, I want to ask you, are we traitors?” she wrote.

“Every woman wants to live life with respect. Thus, Prime Minister sir, I want to return my Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award to you so that these awards do not become a burden on us in the path of living with dignity.”

It’s disheartening to witness the struggles that women in sports face, especially when it comes to harassment. The very individuals who bring pride and medals to our country are often subjected to indignities that diminish the spirit of competition.

These women not only battle opponents in the ring but are also fighting for their dignity off the mat.

We need to build a society that values and protects every individual, regardless of gender. The arena should be a space where talents flourish, not a battlefield where one’s dignity is compromised.
