Nvidia in Talks to Back OpenAI’s Massive $250 Billion Ohio AI Data Center Project
Nvidia is reportedly negotiating a landmark financing agreement with OpenAI to support the development of one of the world’s largest AI infrastructure projects in Ohio.
According to reports, the proposed $250 billion funding guarantee would help OpenAI lease a 10-gigawatt AI data center being developed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank, in Piketon, Ohio. The overall project could exceed $500 billion once AI chips and computing hardware are included.
The facility is expected to deliver up to 800 megawatts of electricity by 2028, providing enough power for approximately 640,000 homes. A separate $33 billion U.S.-Japan energy agreement will reportedly fund a natural gas power plant to supply electricity for the project.
While the proposed guarantee covers the data center lease, it does not include the estimated $350 billion worth of Nvidia AI chips expected to power the facility. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is reportedly discussing additional financing arrangements for the chip deployment.
Earlier reports indicated that Sam Altman and OpenAI signed a potential 20-year lease, giving the company long-term control over the site’s equipment and operations. The project would be built through a public-private partnership after the U.S. Department of Energy approved the use of federal land for the development.
Ohio has become one of America’s fastest-growing data center hubs, with 166 operational facilities and 57 more planned, ranking behind only Virginia, Texas, and California.
Analysts Raise Questions Over AI Financing
The proposed financing has sparked debate among economists and industry experts. Critics argue that major AI companies are increasingly relying on complex funding arrangements in which technology firms finance infrastructure that ultimately drives demand for their own products.
Some analysts warn this creates a cycle where companies invest in one another, making AI demand appear stronger than underlying customer revenue alone would support. They compare the trend to financing practices seen during the late-1990s dot-com boom.
Others disagree, saying these investments simply reflect how modern technology ecosystems operate, with companies investing across suppliers, cloud providers, and AI developers to accelerate innovation.
Political Challenges Continue
Large AI data centers are also facing growing political scrutiny across the United States. Several states have proposed restrictions on new developments over concerns about electricity consumption, environmental impact, and local community involvement.
Despite those challenges, supporters believe demand for AI computing infrastructure will continue to grow rapidly, making large-scale investments essential for the next generation of artificial intelligence services.
Nvidia shares fell nearly 5% following reports of the proposed financing, although the company’s stock remains significantly higher over the past five years as global demand for AI hardware continues to expand.
