Middle East Tensions Rise as Trump Threatens Iran and Tehran Promises Retaliation

U.S. officials say military strikes against Iran could begin as early as this weekend and continue for several days, marking a potential escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Earlier in the day, President Donald Trump suggested that sustained military pressure could eventually weaken Iran’s leadership, expressing growing frustration with diplomatic efforts during a Cabinet meeting. Just days earlier, Trump had said “very friendly negotiations” were taking place, prompting a temporary pause in military action.

The situation shifted after Iran allegedly launched a surprise attack on U.S. forces stationed in Jordan, prompting a retaliatory strike by the United States and raising fears of a broader regional conflict. At the same time, attacks targeting commercial shipping in the region have added to growing security concerns.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a tanker experienced an explosion and a large splash approximately 21 nautical miles (39km) northeast of Khasab, Oman. No damage or injuries were reported, but authorities have launched an investigation and advised vessels operating in the area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Separately, Kuwait’s military announced that its air defence systems are actively intercepting what it described as “hostile drones.” In an official statement, the Kuwaiti army attributed the incident to Iranian aggression and warned residents that any loud explosions heard could be the result of air defence operations targeting incoming drones.
